As one of the biggest sellers of SANY excavators in Kansas City, we place a high value on the safety of heavy equipment operators. We highly recommend that anyone operating heavy equipment undergo the necessary training to work safely and efficiently. With that in mind, here are seven safety tips you should keep in mind when operating an excavator.

#1 – Use Only the Appropriate Attachments

Heavy-duty excavator buckets can range in weight from about 500 pounds to 10,000 pounds. Ensure that any attachment you use is rated for the excavator you are operating. Under load, an oversize or overweight attachment can cause your excavator to tip over.

#2 – Be Aware of Power Lines

Live power lines are a very significant danger when operating an excavator within a short distance. Be sure to identify where all power lines are located and how close you can safely operate your equipment to them before you start a project. This may take a little time, but it is worth it.

#3 – Create Designated Work and Safety Zones

If your worksite has multiple hazards, designate specific safe work zones where your excavator should limit its operation. If you need to work close to a hazard, create a visible boundary with stakes and safety tape.

#4 – Confirm the Location of All Underground Electrical Lines, Gas Lines, and Other Utilities

Call before you dig! In most cases, utility companies will identify the location of electrical, gas, internet, telephone, and other utilities without a fee. Just call 811.

#5 – Work with a SANY Dealer in KC for Regular Maintenance and Inspections

A poorly maintained or damaged excavator is a dangerous excavator. Don’t put your life and the lives of your coworkers at risk. Contact a Kansas City SANY dealer like STE for help with maintenance and repairs.

#6 – Stay Away from Severe Grades

The ground doesn’t have to be perfectly flat to operate an excavator, but keep in mind how inclines affect your ability to stay balanced. When excavators do tip over, it is typically on inclines.

#7 – Work with A Spotter When Near Hazards or Performing Complex Maneuvers

Regardless of experience and training, it is always possible to make a mistake. Lower the possibility of mistakes and accidents by working with a spotter when performing complex operations and working near hazards.
